Understanding Anabolic Steroids

Steroids are a synthetic variant of the testosterone, a male sex hormone. Anabolic steroids is aimed for muscle building and are commonly used to increase male sexual characteristics. "Steroids" refers to the class of drugs. These drugs can be prescribed for conditions that resulted in a hormone deficiency such as delayed puberty, or for diseases that cause a loss in muscle mass such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately anabolic steroids are often abused by athletes in order to improve their performance or simply to acquire a certain appearance. A lot of times steroid users will even combine other steroids to maximize their effectiveness which is called "stacking". Stacking is extremely dangerous and has even been fatal to users. Typically users will inject their steroids or take them orally, but how they get them is what is concerning. In the past it was thought that these steroids were smuggled in from other countries and sold on the black market in gyms, schools, and other places where physical endurance is performed, however recent studies just found that they can be purchased online with nothing more than a credit card or Paypal account.

There are over 100 different types of steroids and more and more younger athletes are indulging themselves in them. The pressures of competition and to earn athletic scholarships has brought many younger people to use steroids. Besides the physical dangers of using, there are other side effects of regular steroid use. For one, users hair starts to thin or fall out all together. This is attractive to some athletes because hair is only a hindrance to their performance. Rapid muscle and weight gain can affect balance and puts added pressures on the joints and bones without acclimating them. Steroid users are notoriously aggressive and tend to get irritated very easily. They constantly have a chip on their shoulder. Worse is the acne. Most steroid users will have terrible bouts with acne, especially on their backs. Since steroids are affecting the hormonal system, male users will have noticeable shrinkage of the penis, testicles, and results in a low sperm count. Long time users that suddenly quit anabolic steroids suffer from depression and studies have shown a high percentage of them make suicidal attempts. Whether anabolic steroids are addictive or not is very unclear, and so are some laws regarding usage in competition sports. Today most professional sport venues in America have banned or at least frowned upon steroid use among professional athletes.
